Malayan Insurance VP Yvonne Yuchengco Wins 2021 Woman Leader of the Year for Programs Empowering Women

The 2021 Asia Insurance Industry Awards has named Malaysian Insurance Co vice president Yvonne Yuchengco.

The Asian Insurance Review wrote about Yuchengco’s recognition:

“Women’s empowerment has been a subject close to her heart and she was instrumental in drawing up a partnership between Malayan Insurance and the IFC in 2018, for a gender-based programme with the objective of increasing women’s access to risk mitigation and financial protection solutions in the Philippines.

Ms Yuchengco’s passion for innovation and to address women’s needs saw Malayan Insurance launch the ‘We Women’ programme, which offers innovative non-life insurance and lifestyle solutions to women in the Philippines. The programme ensures that women have access to the assistance they need for the challenges they face as entrepreneurs, professionals and as heads of families. The programme today encompasses a wide range of activities that help women cope with various life challenges.”

For her part, Yuchengco believes the honor bestowed to her is largely to her company’s gender-based solutions catering to the needs of women for financial protection.

Her latest project was the Stela (Simply The Easiest Live Assistant) co-formulated with International Finance Corporation or IFC.

“Filipinas need more opportunities and tools to help them overcome the challenges they may encounter as a woman, mother, breadwinner, entrepreneur or vehicle owner. Through We Women and Stela Solutions, we empower Filipinas to take charge of their finances, futures, and overall wellbeing,” Yuchengco said about the award.

Stela offers a variety of financial support and a safety net for Filipina women. There’s the Stela Wheels meant to secure women while on the road and Stela Home for the protection of their properties and households. Stela Biz Silver, Gold, and Red help Filipina entrepreneurs look after their businesses, employees, families, and themselves.

Prominent Filipinas have been recognized around Asia in the last years for their contribution to women’s empowerment in different fields using different platforms.

In 2019, Risa Hontiveros was awarded the prestigious Silver Rose Award by SOLIDAR, a European network of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and the European Union (EU) parliamentarians for her contributions “to social justice and solidarity.”

In 2016, Vice President Leni Robredo was given by the Thailand government the Honorary Outstanding Woman Award of the Year 2016 for her works in women empowerment and gender equality.

The We Women program does not just cover the women of the Philippines who want to have financial freedom. It also included the men of the financial world through the We Women’s Gender Sensitivity Trainings. It is so successful that it took home the Best Insurance Education and Training in the Philippines for 2021” award from the Global Banking & Finance Review of UK, and the “Best Good Company Initiative” award at the Tokio Marine Insurance Group 2019 Asian Awards.
