Fil-Aussie CEO of Canva Melanie Perkins Named in Bloomberg 50 of 2021

Melanie Perkins, chief executive officer and co-founder of graphic design platform Canvas, has been selected as one of the Bloomberg 50 of 2021.

Perkins, an Australian of Malaysian and Filipino descent, was selected for the success of her company this year.

Bloomberg wrote about Perkins:

When Perkins started Canva from her mother’s living room in 2012, her goal was to allow anyone to be a decent graphic designer, whether for greeting cards, ads, or videos. The company was already successful before the pandemic. But features it introduced during the worldwide switch to working from home—such as collaboration tools that let people on different continents contribute to the same design— supercharged its growth, vaulting Perkins into the top ranks of tech influence and making her a very wealthy woman. She’s currently worth $5.9 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

What is Bloomberg 50?

The Bloomberg 50, now in its fifth year, is an annual event by the business and market news company. For this year, it seeks to highlight and honor The People and Ideas that Defined Global Business in 2021. Other notal names who made the list are Karen Lynch, president and CEO of CVS Health Corp, David Baszucki, co-founder and CEO of Roblox Corp, and Lina Khan, the youngest chair of the Federal Trade Commission.

Also on the list is half-Filipino Olvia Rodrigo for her hit album Sour.

Perkins’ success is defined by determination and passion. In an interview with Forbes, she shared that her idea was rejected by more than 100 investors.

She continued pitching her idea. When a known investor Bill Tai visited Perth to judge a competition between start-up companies, Perkins and her business partner now husband Cliff Obrecht grabbed the opportunity and had a sit down with Tai. It was not successful but Perkins and her partner became fixtures at events hosted by Tai wherein investors come to look for businesses worth investing at.

“It was like, risk: serious damage; reward: start company,” Perkins said. “If you get your foot in the door just a tiny bit, you have to kind of wedge it all the way in.”

Then they met Lars Rasmussen, co-founder of Google Maps, who asked them to put the idea on hold and work more on the technical aspects of the platform. Eventually, Rasmussen became the tech adviser for Canva and he helped the couple talk to Cameron Adams, an ex-Google employee. Adams then joined in as the third co-founder and from then on, Canvas grew exponentially.

The company now has 1500 employees in different offices from different parts of the globe.

Canva shared that it currently has more than 60 million monthly active users across 190 countries.
